About Us
Rural Women Development Trust
We aim towards creating a society where all communities are equally treated and respected and a place where people can live in harmony devoid of any type of discrimination.
RWDT works towards eliminating bonded labour and empowering people from the Dalit community. Established in 2005 under the guidance of V. Alamelu, who has been in the social sector for many years and previously worked against female infanticide and even prevented child marriages. Our central office is located in the district of Tharamangalam and our operations extend all around the western districts surrounding Salem. We have 6 programmes running actively and we operate in 75 villages at the moment. Having reached 1500 beneficiaries so far through our initiatives, we aim to stand up against all forms of social injustice and create a society where equality, liberty and dignity are followed and respected.

OUR VISION
Envisions a society wherein the deprived people (Dalit Arunthathiar) including those of the Dalit are empowered to enjoy their rights and socio - economic status at par with the mainstream communities.
OUR MISSION
To rescue and rehabilitate Dalit families from bonded labor, stand up against social injustice, to train women with sustainable vocational skills, and help them attain economic independence, access to quality education, and healthcare facilities.
Our Programs
Education
Children from Dalit Arunthathiyar's community don't opt to study due to their poor socio-economic status. Children who have access to education, dropout either to support families, or to the discrimination they face from upper caste. In order to ensure their accessibility to education, we collect the data of children from that community, and reintegrate them to schools. Apart from that, we also run a Children Knowledge Centres in 27 villages, in which we segregate children into learning groups, and develop skill chart for each child to enhance their learning ability. We also formed Children parliament, conduct school enrollment campaign to educate and spread awareness on importance of education. Children who finished their high school are provided career guidance, and scholarship assistance support to ensure their continuity of education.
Human rights
The basic rights of Dalit Arunthathiyar community are exploited. They are considered as lowest class in society and are very often deprived of exercising their rights. We promote their rights by conducting awareness programmes and campaigns in collaboration with local authorities and stakeholders of society. Women and young girls working in garment and textile industries are formed into Worker groups at village level, and federation of workers at District level to safeguard their rights at work place. Internal Complaints Committee has also been formed at many spinning/garment industries. Additionally, transport and other workers' welfare support have been arranged for those workers.
Rescue and Rehabilitation
Families that are caught under bonded labour system are rescued with the help of local authorities. They in turn are provided a home, alternative livelihood options, and income generation activities. Children from those families are sent to school to pursue education. Further, we provide micro trade training, skill training and encourage them to participate in activities that would lead to their sustainable development.
Livelihood
Most of the population from Dalit Arunthathiyar community work as cobblers, bonded labours, manual scavengers, and other menial jobs that are considered less dignified. We form self-help groups for women, manual scavengers, and bonded labourers where they are oriented on self-entrepreneurship skills. Initially, we educate them about alternative livelihood option, financial literacy training, and provide them with capital to start their business. Coir making, bamboo basket making, foot mat making, tailoring, and basic computer skills training are some of the training that we give to promote their livelihood.
